Here\u2019s what to do.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"vaccine_101\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Flu Vaccine 101<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The flu is serious, but it\u2019s also preventable &#8211; and the <strong>flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Studies show that <strong>when more people get vaccinated, the whole community benefits<\/strong> from reduced flu cases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Everyone age\u00a06 months and older is advised to get the flu vaccine<\/strong> each year by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/index.htm?s_cid=cdc_homepage_topmenu_001\" target=\"_blank\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Even if you\u2019ve been vaccinated in the past, <strong>it\u2019s important to get a new flu vaccine every year<\/strong> to make sure you\u2019re still protected. Why?\n<ul>\n<li>The flu vaccine\u2019s protection can lessen over time.<\/li>\n<li>The flu vaccine is updated to protect against the types of each influenza virus (called strains) expected each season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The flu vaccine protects against several strains of the flu.<\/li>\n<li>Some students under age 9 may need a second dose for full protection against the flu. Please contact your student\u2019s regular healthcare provider to see if your student needs a second dose.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone can get flu protection from their regular healthcare provider, pharmacy or at clinics held by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acphd.org\/clinics.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Alameda County Public Health Department<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"fact_or_fiction\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Flu Vaccines: Fact or Fiction<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FICTION:<\/strong> <strong>The flu vaccine causes the flu.<br \/>\nFACT<\/strong>: It is <strong>not possible to get the flu from the virus in the\u00a0flu vaccine<\/strong>. However, some people may get flu-like symptoms as a side effect. These possible side effects are shorter and less severe than the flu.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FICTION:<\/strong> <strong>The flu vaccine is not safe.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>FACT: The flu vaccine <em>is<\/em> safe.<\/strong> There has been extensive research supporting the safety of flu vaccines. Both the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) closely monitor the safety of vaccines approved for use in the United States.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FICTION:<\/strong> <strong>The flu is not serious<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>FACT: The flu isn&#8217;t just a bad cold &#8211; it <em>is<\/em> serious.<\/strong> When preventing the flu is as easy as getting a quick shot in your arm, it\u2019s a smart, safe decision that can protect you and your family from the flu.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FICTION:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Getting the flu vaccine only benefits me.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>FACT:<\/strong> <strong>You can prevent the spread of the flu to others<\/strong>, including the very young and elderly, by protecting yourself from the flu. The very young and very old have weaker immune systems with which to fight the flu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"did_you_know\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Did you know?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hundreds of millions of Americans<\/strong> <strong>have safely received flu vaccines<\/strong> in the past 50 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It can take up to 2 weeks for the body to build full protection<\/strong> against the flu after getting vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>The flu vaccine is not 100% effective. However, if vaccinated people get the flu, their symptoms can be milder than if they were not vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">CDC<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/BiologicsBloodVaccines\/Vaccines\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/a> <strong>monitor the safety of flu vaccines closely<\/strong> and perform extensive tests for quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"tips_tricks\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Tips and Tricks for Staying Healthy<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Make soap and water, along with hand sanitizer, your new best flu-fighting friends. Use them often to clean\u00a0your hands.<\/li>\n<li>Just one cough or sneeze can spread the flu 6 feet! Make sure to cover your mouth or raise your arm and sneeze into your sleeve or elbow.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t give flu germs the chance to jump from place to place. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth when possible.<\/li>\n<li>Throw dirty tissues in the trash right away.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid sharing personal items that go near your mouth like toothbrushes and drinks.<\/li>\n<li>Remember: sharing drinks could mean sharing germs.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s harder for flu germs to infect a healthy body. Take care of yourself by eating healthy, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"what_to_do\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Got the Flu? Here\u2019s what to do.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t give flu germs a chance to spread. Stay home and away from others until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s very easy to spread the flu at home. Keep a safe distance to help ensure everyone else stays healthy and flu free.<\/li>\n<li>Choose a \u201csick\u201d room. It gives germs less chance to spread in your home.<\/li>\n<li>Get rest, plenty of fluids\u2026 and read lots of books.
